THAT’S A WRAP WITH ONLY CHILD

05.23.19

Today we’re chatting is all about wrap styles, a timeless trend I’ve been slightly obsessed with this year. It seems I’m not alone because one of my favourite independent brands, ONLY CHILD, released a number of wrap styles in their SS19 collection. As soon as I saw them ideas started buzzing about in my mind.

Fast forward a couple of months to our latest collaboration in which I’ll be sharing my thoughts on the Palo Wrap Dress, Palo Wrap Jumpsuit and Inez Top. It was such a treat to work with the ONLY CHILD team and founder, Haley Tucker, once again. I’ve been a supporter of this Oakland, CA based line of thoughtfully produced clothing for years now and it’s been amazing to see how each collection just keeps getting better. Catch our first collab in 2015 right here.

As per usual I won’t be keeping all of the items I’ve reviewed and styled today but I wanted to share a range of wrap pieces for folks with different closet needs. I will be hanging onto one of them though! Find out which one it is and my thoughts on each wrap style in the post below.

Ps. If wrap styles aren’t your jam, no worries, I’ve included a roundup of other ONLY CHILD pieces to explore at the end of the post!

PALO WRAP DRESS

You might remember this dress from my Spring Inspiration & Wish List post. Today’s collaboration wasn’t in the works at the time but after a number of readers expressed their interest in this piece I knew it was a good one to try out. It’s safe to say I had A LOT of fun styling and twirling around the studio!

I can imagine wearing this dress on summer holidays, dressed up as a wedding guest, to showers, parties, bbqs and work meetings too. It’s also great to throw on (or should I say wrap on hehe) when I’m in a rush and just need an outfit that’s polished, ready to go and feels great to wear. It’s slightly mind boggling that a piece can be so elegant and so comfy at the same time!

QUICK FACTS ON THE PALO WRAP DRESS

  • PRICE: $280 USD $238 USD with ‘STYLEBEE15’ (you save $42 USD)| Save 15% off any order now through May 31st. All US orders ship free and International orders over $200 USD ship free.
  • FIT: I am wearing a size Small and my measurements are 26 inch waist, 37 inch hip. I’m about 5’7 and 125 lbs. I could have probably worn an XS since this dress has a forgiving fit thanks to the fully adjustable waist but I like the fit of the Small and how the front panels overlap for a higher neckline. Available in sizes XS-XXL and length adjusts slightly per size.
  • FABRIC: 100% mid-weight linen in Rust, which is a slightly muted mix of brick, clay and persimmon. It’s warm and earthy and looks great paired with neutral materials like tan leather shoes and woven bags. These photos are true to life but may differ slightly from screen to screen. Also available in Black, Oatmeal and a gorgeous Indigo.
  • DETAILS: This dress slips on easily over the arms (like a jacket) and can be wrapped and tied to desired tightness. There is lots of room in the hips and the cap style sleeve is not overly structured or restrictive.
  • CARE: Machine wash cold, air dry. Press on high with steam for a clean finish if desired.
  • MADE RESPONSIBLY IN: Oakland, CA. Each item is made to order.

NOTES TO KEEP IN MIND

I really love the Palo Wrap Dress, just as it is, and genuinely haven’t felt this awesome in a garment for a long time.

That said, it might be a lot of dress on a petite frame. Being quite long it might require hemming depending on your height. If you’d prefer a leaner profile and shorter hemline, definitely check out the Emery Wrap Dress that was recently released.

Another note to consider is that the mid-weight linen feels incredible but it could prove a touch too warm for the peek of summer even though it breathes well. I’d be willing to take my chances on it though!

PALO JUMPSUIT

Style Bee - That's A Wrap with Only Child

I’ve tried several wrap jumpsuits in my time and few have checked as many boxes as the Palo Wrap Jumpsuit does. In fact, I’ve tried previous jumpsuit iterations from ONLY CHILD but this is the first one that really worked for me.

When it comes to jumpsuits I prefer a lean but relaxed fit with a straight or wide leg and a way to define the waist. This one answers all those requirements and as a bonus it’s available in a gorgeous fern green, super soft, mid-weight linen that breathes well and feels great on.

The Palo Jumpsuit is a great everyday option for a more casual work environment or could be dressed up for a summer event or special occasion no problem. It’s the type of piece I could imagine wearing all summer long with Birkenstocks or simple slides and an easy bag. It could also segue into Fall with boots and a leather jacket!

QUICK FACTS ON THE PALO JUMPSUIT

  • PRICE: $245 USD $209.25 USD with ‘STYLEBEE15’ (you save $36.75 USD)| Save 15% off any order now through May 31st. All US orders ship free and International orders over $200 USD ship free.
  • FIT: I am wearing a size Small and my measurements are 26 inch waist, 37 inch hip. I’m about 5’7 and 125 lbs. At first the hips felt a bit snug but as the linen warmed up it relaxed for a looser fit, which is what I’d been hoping for. The wrap ties are fastened to the sides of the jumpsuit, meaning they do not impact how the top fits but do serve as a way to cinch the waist. More on that below. Available in sizes XS-XXL and overall length adjusts slightly per size.
  • FABRIC: 100% mid-weight linen in Fern, which is a slightly muted mix of olive, pine and sage. I found it was super soft, even more than the Rust linen. These photos are true to life but may differ slightly from screen to screen. Also available in Black and White linen and Denim (same material as the Inez Top below).
  • DETAILS: This is a pull-on style piece that slips on over the hips and can be tied to desired tightness. This jumpsuit is great for a range of body types. I would say I’m hourglass/pear shaped for reference.
  • CARE: Machine wash cold, air dry. Press on high for a clean finish if desired.
  • MADE RESPONSIBLY IN: Oakland, CA. Each item is made to order.

NOTES TO KEEP IN MIND

The Palo Jumpsuit is super comfy and made of a really soft mid-weight linen, just like the Palo Dress but somehow the fern colour feels softer. This means it’s comfy as can be, however, it will wrinkle. I don’t mind a rumpled look that has a lived-in feel but if you prefer a smoother fabric, this might not be ideal.

The top of this jumper could be considered breast-feeding friendly, however, the ties are attached to the sides of the jumper. This means that how the top overlaps in front is fixed and not adjustable. This is generally okay, but I found it had a tendency to gape out a bit in front and I think if even just one side of the belt let you adjust the top that might be solved. The good news it that the fit will accommodate a larger bust size (I’m a 32 C for reference).

INEZ TIE TOP

Finally we have the Inez Tie Top, which is a bit of an outlier for my personal style but I thought it would be an interesting piece to try that could work nicely in more corporate office settings. Turns out that it is!

I loved the uniqueness of this top’s design and thought the choice to use denim was genius. The shape means business but the side tie and denim fabric signals a bit of fun. I love it paired with fitted black pants and a standout shoe for work but it can be paired with summery pants or a cute skirt for after hours too!

More on the INEZ TIE TOP below.

QUICK FACTS ON THE INEZ TIE TOP

  • PRICE: $160 USD $136 USD with ‘STYLEBEE15’ (you save $24 USD)| Save 15% off any order now through May 31st. All US orders ship free and International orders over $200 USD ship free.
  • FIT: I am wearing a size Small and my measurements are 26 inch waist, 37 inch hip. I’m about 5’7 and 125 lbs. Initially I thought this top was too wide but the wrap ties are adjustable and can help the top fit tighter or looser in the waist as needed. Available in sizes XS-XXL and overall length adjusts slightly per size.
  • FABRIC: 100% cotton mid-weight mid-blue denim. I found it was soft on the skin but a bit more structured than linen. These photos are true to life but may differ slightly from screen to screen.
  • DETAILS: This top goes on over the head and can be tied to desired tightness. The inner front panel is attached so it’s not completely ‘wrap-able’ but the outer front panel has a tie attached that can be adjusted. I wasn’t sure about this design at first but ended up seeing that it keeps the fit and style clean.
  • CARE: Machine wash cold, air dry. Press on high for a clean finish if desired.

    Hi Lee,
Thanks for the great post as always! I was wondering if you can talk about the Janessa Leone hat. Is it worth the hefty price tag? It would be great if you can do a post about her hats 🙂
    Thanks,
    Julia

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hi Julia, Good question. I love JL hats because they’re made really well and they fit great and stay on without being super tight. Her designs are always well considered too. Meaning they’re look good on and function well. I’ve bought hats from other milliners but always go back to JL. I love my Klint hat and it’s been on lots of trips with me but I’m considering adding one with a wider brim so that my shoulders are fully shaded. I love the LUCIE straw hat.

Thanks for the suggestion! I’ve got sun hats on my list for upcoming summer posts so I’m glad you’re interested. xo

  2. Sophie says:

Heya Lee, I was so sure you were going to pick the Inez tie top! You styled it beautifully and the denim look was so eye catching amongst the linens.

    • Lee the Bee says:

Ah! It was a tough call for sure! All three pieces would be great within my closet but I just felt the best in the wrap dress 🙂 Thanks so much for reading!

  3. Bettina says:

Hello Lee! Your choices to highlight a brand or specific items are always spot-on and I really like the detailed way that you introduce the pieces, that’s very helpful! This blog post was especially interesting to me because I had been eyeing the Only Child jumpsuit for a while, not quite ready to pull the trigger, but really wanting to have that push that convinces me to order it! My hesitation is with the size, because I am between sizes. I emailed Only Child and they kindly answered, and suggested to size down (based on hip measurements I would be a L, based on the rest rather a M). I was indeed worried that the top part would gape out – which is why I asked the brand about sizing as well: going for a larger size, I was afraid it would gape, or have too much fabric in general up top. Going down a size, I am worried that it would be too snug at the hips.
Do you think a snap closure would solve the gaping issue at the top? I have done that with another jumpsuit I have and it works pretty well.
Do you have any other thoughts about “space” left at the hips (even though we’re not the same sizes and I read that you said it relaxes a little with wear)? I love jumpsuits, especially linen ones, I love the wrap idea, and would really like it to work for me, but I’m a bit nervous about ordering!
If you have any thoughts at all, it would be much appreciated, thank you so much!

    • Lee the Bee says:

Hey Bettina, So glad you find these posts helpful! I appreciate your hesitation with sizing. To answer your questions:

1 – Clasps – Yes! I think a little clasp or a hook/eye closure would definitely help the gaping on the top. That’s a great idea.

2 – Between Sizing – I think it depends where you fall in the L measurements. If you’re only an inch or so into the L measurements I’d say a M could work for sure. I’m on the high end of the hip measurements in the S but found that it was not a problem after a bit of time wearing it around. The linen relaxed enough to be loose through the hip/butt.

I hope that helps and feel free to send over any other questions! xo
